In recent weeks, new research* has been published revealing more about the UK’s alcohol consumption. With beers, wines and spirits a key part of a convenience store offering, it’s important keep abreast of any shifts in consumer behaviour.Â
Â
More are moderatingÂ
Findings from Drinkaware’s research, the UK alcohol consumption charity, shows that moderation is growing within UK drinking culture. A record 42 million people say they use at least one technique to moderate the amount they drink, by taking drink free days during the week, as well as choosing no and low alcohol options. In fact, 48% of consumers are using these products to manage their alcohol consumption, up from 2025.Â
For retailers, this shows the importance of stocking a range of no and low alcohol options, as they continue to grow in popularity.Â
Â
But consumption remains highÂ
Although people are looking to moderate their drinking more, the findings reveal that during a typical drinking session, the number of units consumed is higher - and binge drinking is becoming more common.Â
In the last 12 months, 13% of all drinkers – approximately 6.3 million people – reported binge drinking at least once a week, up on last year. Additionally, the percentage of people who consumer four or less units decreased from 71% to 67%.Â
And, depending on the occasion, drinkers find moderation more difficult. For example, 56% of drinkers consume more when out for an evening with friends, as well as over 50% saying they drink more on holiday.Â
Â
Drinking patterns shiftÂ
Taking into consideration results from the research, it is becoming increasingly important to stock a more comprehensive range of beers, wines and spirits. Having a strong range – including no and low options – will ensure that in-store products offer something for the varied shopper missions we are seeing in this category, as drinking patterns shift. Â
