Bonfire Night: Bringing shoppers together this Autumn

Fireworks, food and friends marks a key occasion for convenience

Remember, remember the fifth of November! Bonfire Night is one of those distinctively British Autumn occasions that brings people together as the evenings get darker and colder.

Whether consumers are heading out to a local display, gathering in the garden with sparklers or simply hunkering down and watching from their windows, the occasion creates lots of opportunities for food and drink - and a reason for shoppers to make that quick dash to their local store.

A nationwide celebration

The UK Government estimates that around 20 million people take part in fireworks activities at home each year, while 45% of people surveyed attended an organised or private fireworks display in the previous year*.

Interest in the occasion continues to translate into spending. Mintel’s latest UK Halloween and Bonfire Night research reports that consumer spending on products for the two occasions grew strongly in 2025**, highlighting the continues importance of seasonal celebrations to shoppers.

More than just fireworks

For many shoppers, Bonfire Night is as much about what they eat and drink, as fireworks.

Outdoor displays and gatherings create opportunities for warming food, snacks and drinks - think hot dogs, burgers, beers, wines, confectionary and hot chocolate.

Bonfire night is also often an informal occasion with last minute invitations and unexpected decisions, which can all lead to a quick trip to the local store.

How independent retailers can spark sales

Bonfire Night sits in a useful place in the Autumn/Winter calendar. With Halloween over and Christmas still to come, the occasion gives shoppers a reason to celebrate in early November.

Retailers should focus on making the night easy to shop for. Make sure relevant seasonal products are visible and merchandised together in the lead up to 5th November. It is also worth preparing for last-minute demand, as shoppers are likely to make top-up or ‘on-route to local display’ trips.

With millions of people participating in fireworks activities every year, don’t miss out on this valuable seasonal occasion.
