With Halloween, Bonfire Night, Diwali and Christmas all taking place in quick succession, make sure you’re giving shoppers a reason to stop, browse and buy.
Make the occasion visible
Seasonal shopping doesn’t always start with a list. A well-placed display can remind shoppers that an occasion is approaching, inspire an idea and encourage impulse purchases.
Mintel’s 2026 research found that 9 in 10 UK adults buy seasonal products, while 62% of buyers choose products that remind them of childhood*.
For independent retailers, there’s an opportunity to tap into this nostalgia by placing classic seasonal products front and centre.
Keep it simple
With space at a premium, a seasonal display does not need to take over the whole store.
Think about:
- Location: Entrances, till areas, and high-footfall spots to help products get noticed
- Grouping: Bringing together related products making the occasion easier to shop
- Signposting: Simple POS can tell shoppers what the display is about at a glance
- Timing: Refresh displays as one occasion ends and another approaches
Sell the occasion, not just the product
The strongest displays give shoppers a reason to buy.
Halloween could be about organising a spooktacular party or trick-or-treating with the kids, whereas Bonfire Night might be about sharing s’mores and hot chocolate with friends whilst watching the fireworks.
Get ready for autumn/winter seasonal events
The advantage of a local shop in the ability to react quickly. Smaller, well-timed displays can create impact without taking up valuable space for weeks.
The key is to make the occasion easy to spot, easy to understand and easy to shop.
A little creativity can also go a long way – don’t just show shoppers what’s available; give them ideas and inspiration of what occasions the products will create.
