Convenience stores in modern society

Convenience stores in modern society

Convenience stores have always been an important part of UK communities. They are places for picking up household items and food, to posting letters and collecting the daily paper.

With over 50,000* convenience stores across mainland UK - 71% operated by independent retailers - shoppers continue to choose convenience. Beyond product range, we take a look at what modern shoppers really value from convenience stores.

  • Positive impact of a convenience store

For the modern shopper, there is still a huge desire to have convenience stores on the high street. Post Offices, pharmacies and convenience stores are the top three stores* that locals feel have the most positive impact on their community.

As a trusted anchor on the high street, keep your opening hours consistent and provide a reliable service that customers can depend on.

  • Knowing your local shop

In an ever-more digital world, building human relationships has become a very valuable attribute and this is where convenience stores really come into their own. In fact, 32%* of shoppers who shop in convenience stores know the people running or working in their local shop ‘very well’ or ‘quite well’.

So, taking the extra time to greet customers with a smile, getting to know names or remembering favourite products can go a long way towards building rapport and loyalty.

  • Local shop, supporting local people

Convenience stores have always been known for supporting the communities they serve; this is still the case today. 80%* of independent retailers engaged in some form of community activity in the past year, covering a wide range of projects. Research* reveals:

  • 58% collected money for a national or local charity.
  • 39% donated to a food bank
  • 14% provided funding or in-kind support to a community event
  • 13% provided sponsorship to a local sports team or other community activity

Supporting local groups or projects resonates with shoppers. Here at Co-op Wholesale, our registered charity, Making a Difference Locally (MADL), raises funds in Co-op Wholesale partner stores from sales of all Co-op and Heritage own-label products, with a percentage going into a virtual fund for retailers to donate. More than £20 million has been raised by Making a Difference Locally for good causes across the UK to date.

Whether your local support is via MADL or another charity, make sure you share your community activity on social media or create a noticeboard in-store to highlight the positive impact your store is making.

Whilst retail has changed over time, it’s clear to see local, convenience stores continue to have incredibly important role in society, with shoppers valuing the personal relationships and positive impact they have in their area.
